A Face for Radio! Earlier this week I was interviewed by none other than Tom Racine, the host of TTR, and will be “appearing” (so to speak) as a guest on the show! All of which leads to just one obvious conclusion: Tall Tale Radio has hit the skids and is desperate for guests of any kind… why else would they sink this low? Maybe Tom’s just run out of really fascinating people to talk with, like Stephen Pastis (Pearls Before Swine), Jeff Keane (The Family Circus), John and Anne Hambrock (The Brilliant Mind of Edison Lee), Mark Tatuli (Heart of the City, Lio), Dave Coverly (Speedbump), Andrew Farago of the San Fransisco Cartoon Art Museum, John Read of Stay Tooned magazine and many others. Who knows? All I know is I managed to blather on for an hour or so, and Tom promised to edit me down to only the interesting things I had to say. Has Tall Tall Radio ever done a 5 minute interview before? I guess we’ll find out. The episode with me is tentatively set for Monday, Dec. 28th. If nothing else, it will be a sure cure for insomnia, and I can only hope I don’t bring TTR down in flames with me.
I few months back I did a short post singing the praises of Tall Tale Radio, the podcast show that focuses on the cartooning and comics industry. I’m a big fan of the show and an avid listener.
Louisiana Happiness? Dec. 17, 2009 -- There may be something to be said for southern hospitality and sunshine. A new study shows that Southern states are the happiest while coastal rivals New York and California are at the bottom of the list. Researchers ranked the happiest states (plus the District of Columbia) on self-reported measures of happiness as well as objective measures like sunshine, congestion, and housing affordability and found six out of the top 10 happiest states were in the South. Louisiana topped the list, followed by Hawaii, Florida, Tennessee, and Arizona rounding out the top five. New York ranked dead last at number 51 and California fared only slightly better at number 46. "We have been asked a lot whether we expected that states like New York and California would do so badly in the happiness ranking," says researcher Andrew Oswald of the University of Warwick in Coventry, England, in a news release. "Many people think these states would be marvellous places to live in. The problem is that if too many individuals think that way, they move into those states, and the resulting congestion and house prices make it a non-fulfilling prophecy." In the study, published in Science, researchers took a different approach in ranking the happiest states. Rather than relying solely on surveys that ask people how happy they are or economists' measures of quality-of-life data, researchers decided to combine the two and compare how the states measured up. They used information from a 2005-2008 nationwide life satisfaction survey of 1.3 million Americans and a 2003 study with objective happiness indicators for each state, such as how much rain and sunshine each state received, number of hazardous waste sites, commuting time, violent crime, air quality, spending on education and highways, and cost of living. When they compared the tables side by side, they found a very close correlation between how happy people said they were and objective quality-of-life measures. "We wanted to study whether people's feelings of satisfaction with their own lives are reliable, that is, whether they match up to reality -- of sunshine hours, congestion, air quality, etc -- in their own state. And they do match," says Oswald. "When human beings give you an answer on a numerical scale about how satisfied they are with their lives, it is best to pay attention. Their answers are reliable. This suggests that life-satisfaction survey data might be very useful for governments to use in the design of economic and social policies."

::Project 8-Bit Wonder:: is now GoNintendo desktop wallpapers!

I've partnered with GoNintendo, my favorite Nintendo blog to release my Nintendo inspired desktop wallpapers!
If you've visited my blog before you might pick up on a couple things. I love my wife, my cats, my work -- and I love Nintendo. For me, I get the most enjoyment out of Mario and Zelda games, the classic Nintendo. It's one of those things that's difficult for me to put into words so this is where, as usual, I turn to pictures. As a way of instant decompression, what makes the difference for me personally is being able to unwind, even for a few minutes, with a little Mario at night; keeps me sane when the workload is crazy.
Another thing you might have picked up on is that I like to fit in personal projects during my normal client work. Recently I've been involved with an all-consuming animation job and I've been averaging 15 hour days, 7 days a week, give or take for the last 2 and a half months. When I could sneak in a little time here and there over the past few weeks, I thought it would be fun (and instant stress relief) to revisit these Nintendo classics for a tribute :
My goal for this little project was to work with particular, iconic colors and flat, graphic shapes -- put them together and try to approach certain feelings or memories connected to the individual games.
I took a little license with some of them, but for the most part I tried to stay as true as I could to the original 8 bit colors.
I hope you will enjoy them!
With out further ado, here they are :
