What is ArtDojo?
ArtDojo solves a problem I had - bookmarking cool artwork I found from around the web and tagging it so I could find it later. There are other image bookmarking sites but I wanted one dedicated to art rather than photos or design. Other sites like DeviantArt and CGHub have similar features, but I was restricted to art within those communities. While those communities are big, the internet is bigger. Now I can keep track of art from any of the communities on the web as well any of the hundreds of blogs I follow.
How do I bookmark images?
Use the ArtDojo Bookmarklet to bookmark images. Try to make sure you are bookmarking images that are on permalink pages to avoid link rot. The best pages to bookmark are specific blog posts, forum posts, and art community pages. They have less chance of becoming 404 pages (pages that disappear).
Before faving bookmarks that other users have added, you should go to the page they have bookmarked to make sure the page is a permalink page.
Are there any rules or guidelines?
- Bookmark Permalink Pages - Bookmark images that are on permalink pages to avoid link rot. Permalink pages are typically things like specific blog posts, forum posts, and entries on art community pages.
- Mark Images with Nudity - Properly mark images with nudity when you bookmark them.
- No Explicit Images - Nudity is allowed, but sexually explicit images, pornography, and hentai are not allowed. Abuse will result in your account being banned. I know that sometimes this line will be blurry, so just try to use your best judgement and if in doubt, don't bookmark it.
The bookmarklet is not working, now what?
Contact me and let me know what page you are trying to bookmark. Most times this is because the website may be using frames or some fancy javascript. If the website is using frames, you will need to open the frame containing the image in a new window. If the problem is something else, the image may need to be opened in a new window by itself.
What about image copyrights?
ArtDojo only saves thumbnails of images to it's server. This is considered fair use. I prefer this method as it drives traffic to the artist's website where you can leave some comments about how awesome their artwork is. I encourage people to do this and it is why there is no commenting on images here. As an art lover I prefer to promote the artist's websites rather than stealing full-size images from them to keep people on the ArtDojo website. This also encourages artists to post more art and that's what we all want. It's a win-win.
Can I upload images?
Nope. Do you have images on your computer but can't find where they are at on the web? Try using tineye.com or googles reverse image search to search the internet for the image. Once you find it, bookmark it to ArtDojo.
How is this website built?
The site runs on Django (a Python framework). Hosting is provided by Webfaction (affiliate link). All the images for the site are hosted on Amazon S3. JQuery is used all over for various effects and usability.
